What we know about the lawsuit accusing Jay-Z of raping a teenager with Sean “Diddy” Combs

Rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was accused in a lawsuit Sunday of raping a young girl after an awards show more than two decades ago, along with hip-hop singer Sean “Diddy” Combs. Hop mogul facing federal sex trafficking charges and a wave of sexual assault lawsuits.

The plaintiff in Sunday’s lawsuit said she was 13 years old at the time of the alleged assault, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York.

Carter denied the allegations, calling them “idiotic” in a statement on Sunday. Combs’ legal team dismissed the lawsuit as a “shameless publicity stunt.”

Here’s what we know about the litigation.

What are the allegations against Carter?

The lawsuit was originally filed against Combs in October and was amended Sunday to include Carter as a defendant.

The plaintiff, identified in the lawsuit as “Jane Doe,” said she met the men after the 2000 MTV Music Video Awards at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. She tried to attend the event – or go to an afterparty – but didn’t have a ticket and began accosting limo drivers outside, the lawsuit says.

One of the drivers said he worked for Combs and told the teenager she “fit what Diddy was looking for,” the lawsuit says. After the driver brought her an afterparty, the plaintiff said she was told to sign a nondisclosure agreement that she believed gave her a drink that made her “lightheaded,” the lawsuit says.

The plaintiff lay down in a room, the lawsuit says, and Combs and Carter entered. According to the lawsuit, Carter removed her clothing and raped her while Combs and a female celebrity not named in the document watched.

Combs tried to force her to perform oral sex, but the plaintiff hit him in the neck and he stopped, the lawsuit says. She grabbed her clothes, ran to a gas station and called her father, the lawsuit says.

What does Carter say about the suit?

In a statement, Carter said the attorney who filed the lawsuit “made a terrible error of judgment in thinking that all ‘celebrities’ were the same.” I don’t come from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of Project Brooklyn. We don’t play games like that. We have very strict rules of conduct and honor. We protect children, you seem to exploit people for personal gain.”

“Only your network of conspiracy theorists, fake physicists, will believe the idiotic claims you have made against me, which, if not for the seriousness of the harm to children, would be ridiculous,” he added.

Carter described a pre-trial warning letter from the attorney who filed the lawsuit as an attempt to “blackmail” him into making a settlement. Attorney Tony Buzbee said his client only sought confidential mediation and did not ask for any money.

In response to the letter, Buzbee said in the amended statement of claim that Carter orchestrated a “conspiracy of harassment, bullying and intimidation against Plaintiff’s attorneys, their families, associates and former employees in order to prevent Plaintiff from naming Jay-Z.” .”

On Monday, a lawyer for Carter asked a judge to either deny a request for anonymity for the plaintiff or dismiss the case.

Carter’s attorney requested an expedited hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.

Attorney Alex Spiro said the plaintiff’s decision to file a lawsuit anonymously was “contrary to a genuine attempt to determine the truth or falsity of these allegations and not an attempt to reach a quick, extortionate settlement.”

How are Carter and Combs related?

Both men rose to fame in the 1990s New York hip-hop scene: Combs founded Bad Boy Records and helped launch the career of Notorious B.I.G., and Carter helped found and released Roc-A-Fella Records His debut album in 1996.

They appeared in each other’s music and became well-known – and wealthy – entrepreneurs whose business ventures extended far beyond hip-hop.

Carter founded the entertainment company Roc Nation in 2008. Forbes estimates his fortune at $2.5 billion. According to Forbes, much of Diddy’s wealth in recent years has come from a partnership with a vodka brand.

What are the allegations against Combs?

Combs, 55, was arrested in September in connection with what federal authorities say was a years-long scheme to sexually abuse and exploit women. According to federal prosecutors, he was charged with conspiracy to commit extortion, sex trafficking and transportation for the purpose of prostitution.

Prosecutors in New York’s Southern District accused Combs of coercing women into elaborate, drug-fueled “freak-offs” with male sex workers that the hip-hop mogul arranged, directed and recorded.

Combs was also named as a defendant in lawsuits filed by Buzbee on behalf of more than 100 accusers from across the United States.

Combs, who is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges and his attorneys have denied the allegations in the lawsuits.

“As his legal team has previously stated, Mr. Combs has full confidence in the facts and integrity of the judicial process,” his legal representatives said in a statement Sunday. “The truth will prevail in court: that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted or sexually assaulted anyone – man or woman, adult or minor.”
