Martha Stewart hosts the Christmas tree lighting at the Bedford Post Inn

For Sunday Hospitality’s inaugural year of operating the Bedford Post Inn, a Relais & Chateaux property, the group has tapped Martha Stewart of Bedford to creatively direct the inn’s holiday décor.

With their connection to the community and the new Netflix documentary about them, the holidays at this iconic location are sure to be merry and bright, especially because the centerpieces of the installation – two towering Christmas trees, one in the Tavern restaurant and one at the Exterior – sourced from Stewart’s evergreen tree farm down the road.

Stewart was on hand on December 6th and hosted an intimate tree lighting ceremony with mulled wine and appetizers. Proceeds from the evening went to the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital.

On December 7th, the inn hosted the town of Bedford for a second tree lighting event.

The Bedford Post Inn dates back to the 18th century, when the main building served as an important stagecoach stop on Old Post Road, a major thoroughfare that connected New York City to Boston. It was originally built in 1762. During the Revolutionary War, Bedford and the surrounding areas played a crucial role as a strategic outpost. It is believed that the inn, with its vantage point and resources, provided lodging and lodging for soldiers and local militia. Stories passed down through generations suggest that the inn’s wine cellar may have been used as a hiding place for valuable supplies and even people during times of conflict. In the 18th and 19th centuries it continued to serve as a refuge for weary travelers and mail riders to take a breather. As transportation evolved and the stagecoach era came to an end, the Bedford Post Inn was transformed into a private residence. In 2007, actor Richard Gere and his business partner Russell Hernandez purchased the property and began an extensive renovation project to return the property to its former glory, keeping its history in mind while incorporating modern luxuries. Today the inn and its restaurants – The Tavern and The Barn – are managed by Sunday Hospitality. The Journal News/lohud reported on the restaurant’s reopening in June.
