Gophers men’s basketball loses at Indiana as defensive struggles continue

BLOOMINGTON, IND. — Gophers coach Ben Johnson and Indiana’s Mike Woodson were equally frustrated with the lack of defense coming into Assembly Hall on Monday. Midway through the first half, both teams shot over 70% from the field.

That wasn’t a pace that the worst-scoring team in the Big Ten could keep up with, especially in one of the most hostile environments in college.

After seven lead changes in the first 10 minutes, the Gophers went scoreless for more than seven minutes and fell into a hole they couldn’t get out of in an 82-67 loss to the Hoosiers.

The Gophers (6-5, 0-2 Big Ten) lost their ninth straight game to Indiana, their longest recent losing streak against a Big Ten opponent. They also haven’t won in Bloomington, Indiana since 2012.

Dawson Garcia, who finished the game with 22 points, scored half of his team’s points early as the Gophers led by as many as five points after an 8-1 run. This was a Minnesota team that averaged a Big Ten-low 65.2 points.

After building a 22-20 lead, the Gophers suffered a losing streak and didn’t score another field goal until just under four minutes before halftime. They were outnumbered 16-1 at one point and were down 44-31 at halftime.

The Hoosiers (8-2, 1-0), who shot 57 percent in the game, had five players in double figures: Oumar Ballo at 7-foot, Malik Reneau at 6-9 and Mackenzie Mgbako at 6-9 a combined 47 and 17 points rebounds.

Defense was something the Gophers prided themselves on in the first month of the season, but they fell apart on that side of the ball in early conference play. Michigan State became the first opponent to shoot above 50% against Minnesota, scoring 27 transition points in a 90-72 loss at Williams Arena last Wednesday.
