Colorado star Travis Hunter names four Heisman Trophy finalists for the 2024 season

Colorado star Travis Hunter names four Heisman Trophy finalists for the 2024 season

The 2024 Heisman Trophy finalists were announced Monday, and two front-runners are officially in the running.

Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty are considered the two favorites to win the award, while Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami’s Cam Ward round out the quartet.

It’s been an exciting college football season in the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff. But even though his Buffaloes won’t be playing for a national title, Hunter’s efforts, along with Shedeur Sanders, the potential first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, have led to a successful Colorado season.

Hunter is the clear favorite to win the Heisman because he can do something no one in college football can do: play on both sides of the ball.

Hunter played full-time on offense and defense and finished in the top five in receptions, yards, touchdowns and passes defensed. Pro Football Focus gave him top marks for coverage again this season.

On offense, Hunter had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 games, averaging 96.0 yards through the air per game. And on defense, he intercepted 11 passes and collected four interceptions and 32 combined tackles in the same game.

Even though Hunter is the overwhelming favorite, it was just a blast watching Jeanty lead the Broncos to the Mountain West Conference title while also earning a bye as the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff.

Jeanty led college football in rushing yards (2,497), rushing touchdowns (29), total touchdowns (30) and rush attempts (344) as the Broncos’ offense really ran through the junior, who is also expected to be a first-rounder April.

His argument for beating Hunter is the fact that he led a Group of Five school to a CFP bye in his historic season. If he breaks Barry Sanders’ all-time rushing record (2,628), who knows how the vote will play out.

But there is only a single No. 1 seed in the CFP this year, and Gabriel’s Ducks are it, as his sixth collegiate season has resulted in more elite performances.

Gabriel rushed for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns on 297 aerial attempts, helping the Ducks to an undefeated 13-0 regular season.

The Hawaii native’s best game came against No. 2 Ohio State, where he racked up 341 passing yards and three total touchdowns, proving that Oregon was the team to make it into the Big One in the conference’s first season Ten had to be beaten. Oregon went on to beat Penn State to win the Big Ten, and now they’re looking for an undefeated season with a national title to go with it.

Ward, another potential first overall pick in 2025, is as cool and collected as a quarterback can be, which has led to numerous wins for the Hurricanes this season when they came from behind.

He’s also a fantastic college football story, starting with Incarnate Word out of high school, his only offer, and eventually leading college football in passing touchdowns with 36, finishing second this year with 4,123 passing yards.

Miami didn’t make the CFP this year, but you can argue that Ward was the best quarterback in the game this season, which earned him a trip to New York.
