The St. Louis Cardinals are interested in moving on from Nolan Arenado and they may have a suitor for him.

According to MLB.com’s John Denton, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said it was his “intention to try” to trade the third baseman. Katie Woo of the Athletic reported that the New York Yankees are interested in Arenado after failing to re-sign Juan Soto.

“At least one team involved in the Soto bid – the New York Yankees – has expressed interest in Arenado, according to a league source, although it is currently unclear whether the Yankees are among Arenado’s approved teams,” Woo wrote.

Arenado will make $74 million in the remaining three years of his eight-year, $260 million contract, and Mozeliak expressed that the desire to trade him was financially motivated.

“We both remain optimistic that both parties will somehow remain happy,” Mozeliak said. “(Arenado staying with the Cardinals) is a possibility, but I’m not sure that gets us where we want to be. From a financial perspective, if we’re trying to defer our payroll – there are certainly other ways to do it, but (trade). Arenado would be a big help, but it also creates a runway for someone else.

One hurdle to the Yankees trading Arenado is his no-trade clause, which could allow him to veto a deal with New York. If he favors a trade to the Yankees, things could turn out well for both St. Louis and New York.

As Mozeliak mentioned, the Cardinals are looking to save some salary while trying to focus on younger talent. The Yankees, meanwhile, stand to make a little more salary after missing out on Soto, who signed with the New York Mets.

The Yankees need a solid infielder who can provide a spark at the plate, and Arenado fits the bill. He had 16 homers, 71 RBI and a .272 batting average a season ago and could help New York avoid a major regression with one of their best players leaving this offseason.
