Report: Duke football quarterback Maalik Murphy is entering the transfer portal

The Blue Devils’ starting quarterback is moving on for the second year in a row.

Duke football’s Maalik Murphy is reportedly entering the transfer portal, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. According to the report, Murphy will not play in Duke’s TaxSlayer Gator Bowl against Ole Miss on Jan. 2 and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Murphy transferred from Texas to Durham, where he started two games as a backup to Quinn Ewers. He was a highly touted prospect in the portal and committed to the Blue Devils last December.

The signal caller broke the program record for touchdowns in a single season with 26 and threw for 2,933 yards that year. The Inglewood, California native helped lead Duke to a 9-3 record, most recently completing a last-second touchdown throw in the Blue Devils’ regular-season finale against Wake Forest. He also struggled with consistency at times, recording 12 interceptions and a 60.3% completion rate.

Grayson Loftis and Henry Belin IV, both starters last season, will likely compete against the Rebels for the starting spot.

The program did not immediately respond to The Chronicle’s request for comment at the time of publication.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is released.
