Red Flag Warning San Diego: Track down power outages

SDG&E warned more than 100,000 customers in hard-hit areas over the weekend that their power could be shut off to prevent wildfires.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. – The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning starting at 10 a.m. Monday and lasting through 4 a.m. Wednesday. That prompted San Diego Gas & Electric to warn more than 100,000 customers in hard-hit areas from Alpine to Warner Springs that their power could be shut off to prevent wildfires. “We expect to experience damaging winds in parts of our hinterland during this particular event. “All indications are that we will see wind speeds well over 50 mph and even over 70 mph in our windiest upstate locations,” said meteorologist Brian D’Agostino, vice president of Wildfire and Climate Science at SDG&E.

“In addition to these very strong winds, we have not seen any significant precipitation so far this fall. So as we look at the major events in December, let’s look back at December 2017 and December 2020 and look back at these historic events “We are preparing for another significant Santa Ana wind event here in San Diego,” D’Agostino continued .

Power Shutoffs for Public Safety

SDG&E shut off power to more than 39,000 customers at 9 p.m. Monday to reduce the threat of wildfires in San Diego County during the advisory.

  • Campo
  • Campo reservation
  • Capitan Grande Reserve
  • Descanso
  • El Cajon
  • Escondido
  • Fallbrook
  • Granite hills
  • Jacumba
  • Jamul
  • Jamul Indian Village
  • Julian
  • La Jolla Reservation
  • La Posta reservation
  • lakeside
  • Los Coyotes Reservation
  • Manzanita Reservation
  • Mesa Grande Reservation
  • Pala
  • Pala reservation
  • Pauma and Yuima Reserve
  • Pauma Valley
  • Pine Valley
  • Ramona
  • Ranchita
  • Rincon Reservation
  • Santa Ysabel
  • Santa Ysabel Reservation

Closure of schools and casinos

The San Diego County Office of Education announced that some school districts will remain closed Tuesday, Dec. 10, due to power shutoffs for safety reasons.

The following will be closed:

  • Julian Union Elementary School
  • Julian Union High
  • Jamul Dulzura Union
  • Mountain kingdom
  • Spencer Valley
  • Warner Unified

Harrah’s Resort in Valley Center also announced it would remain closed to guests and teammates until further notice on Dec. 9 due to mandatory power outages.

Security and preparedness

  • Report downed power lines or gas emergencies to San Diego Gas & Electric at 800-411-7343
  • Do not touch downed power lines or broken gas lines. Report them to the police or fire department immediately
  • Do not touch anyone who has been in contact with a power line
  • When evacuating, disconnect all electrical appliances, turn off power at the electrical panel, turn off gas supply at the meter, and turn off water supply at the main valve
  • Secure loose outdoor items such as umbrellas, trash cans and patio furniture to prevent them from flying away and damaging power lines
  • Drive slower and brake harder
  • Have a set of essential supplies ready. Have a battery-operated radio and flashlights handy. Don’t rely solely on candles for lighting
  • Provide backup power for all medical equipment

Prepare for forest fire evacuation

CalFire has compiled a list of items to have ready in case you and your family are evacuated during a wildfire or disaster.

Make sure your Wildfire Go bag contains the following:

  • A three-day supply of non-perishable food and 3 gallons of water per person
  • A map with at least 2 escape routes
  • Necessary prescriptions or medications
  • A change of clothing and additional glasses/contact lenses
  • Extra car keys, credit cards, cash or travelers checks
  • A first aid kit and hygiene items
  • A flashlight and a battery-operated radio with additional batteries
  • Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)
  • Pet food and water
  • Always keep sturdy shoes and a flashlight near your bed to be prepared for sudden evacuations at night

If time permits, consider adding:

  • Valuables that are easy to transport
  • Family photos and irreplaceable items
  • Personal computer data on hard drives and storage media
  • Chargers for cell phones and laptops
