SM Krishna dies: Karnataka govt declares public holiday on Wednesday | Bengaluru

The last rites of the loyal leader will be performed on Wednesday in Maddur, the hometown of SM Krishna.

The Karnataka government on Wednesday declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the state and government offices in honor of former chief minister SM Krishna (92), who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday. The Karnataka government has already announced three days of national mourning as a mark of respect for veteran politician and former chief minister SM Krishna. Public entertainment programs are prohibited throughout the state during this period and the national flag will be flown at half-mast in all government buildings.

SM Krishna had been suffering from age-related problems for some time and was even hospitalized several times. SM Krishna’s family member and Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar is handling arrangements for the veteran leader’s last rites with full state honours.

Condolences from Prime Minister Modi

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the family of SM Krishna. In an X post, PM Modi wrote, “Shri SM Krishna Ji was a remarkable leader who was admired by people from all walks of life. He always worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. He is fondly remembered as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, particularly for his focus on infrastructure development. Shri SM Krishna Ji was also a prolific reader and thinker.”

Prime Minister Modi also said that he met SM Krishna several times and will cherish the moments. “I have had many opportunities to interact with Shri SM Krishna Ji over the years and I will always cherish those interactions. I am deeply saddened by his death. My condolences go out to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi added.

The Karnataka Assembly session has been adjourned and many state leaders are likely to visit Maddur and attend the last rites of SM Krishna.
