Mariah Carey knocks Kendrick Lamar off the Billboard Hot 100 peak

Another year, another Mariah Carey record. This afternoon the artist returned to the helm of the Billboard Hot 100 with their all-time Christmas hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. The track is her 19th to top the chart, and it’s the sixth consecutive year the song has reached the top spot — basically a given since Billboard changed its rules to better accommodate streaming in 2018.

We’ll see in the coming weeks whether Carey can maintain her position over the Christmas period. She’s courted more and more competition over the years, most notably from Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” which briefly dethroned the Queen of Christmas last year as the holidays approached. Lee made it to second place this week. Behind it is “Last Christmas” by Wham! – which may get even more of a boost after Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter covered it in their new Netflix Christmas special – at number three, while Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” made it to number five. Closing out the Christmas songs in the top ten is “A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives, which comes in at number ten.

After dominated the charts last weekKendrick Lamar still holds some spots despite the holiday rush. “TV Off” featuring Lefty Gunplay is still at number four, while “Luther” featuring SZA and “Squabble Up” – last week’s number one – are at numbers six and seven, respectively. Shaboozey, who almost broke Lil Nas’ record “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars is the last non-holiday song in the top ten at number nine.
