Mariah Carey’s “Christmas” No. 1 on the Hot 100 for its 15th week

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” once again beats all competition on the Billboard Hot 100, moving up nine spots to No. 1, its 15th time at the top of the charts in a week.

The carol reigns supreme in a record-breaking sixth Christmas season. It was originally released on Carey’s album Merry Christmas in November 1994 and as streaming increased and Christmas music became more prominent in streaming services’ playlists, it reached the top 10 of the Hot 100 for the first time in December 2017 and the top 5 for the first time during the 2018 holiday season. It ultimately ran through the 2019 (three weeks), 2020 (two), 2021 (three), 2022 (four) and 2023 (two) holidays before this week.

“When I wrote it, I had absolutely no idea the impact the song would eventually have around the world,” Carey marveled in 2021. “I’m so grateful that so many people enjoy it with me every year.”

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” became Carey’s 19th Hot 100 No. 1, the highest ranking among soloists and one point shy of the Beatles’ overall record of 20. Carey also became the first artist to reach No. 1 Charted in four different decades (1990s, 2000s, ’10s and ’20s).

Holiday cheer fills half of the Hot 100’s top 10, including the entire top 3. Under Carey, Brenda Lee is 15-2 with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” which was No. 1 for three weeks last holiday season and has 65 years finally reached its peak after its release. “Last Christmas” by Wham! to 18:3 as the 1984 single hits a new Hot 100 high.

Two more classics return to the top 10 on the Hot 100: Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (19-5) and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (33-10).

The Hot 100 combines U.S. streaming of all genres (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the latter metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; Digital Singles sales through direct-to-consumer (D2C) websites are excluded from chart calculations.
