The first trailer for 28 Years Later reveals Aaron Taylor-Johnson with a bow and arrow, Cillian Murphy, who could be a zombie, and the Teletubbies

The debut trailer for “28 Years Later” is online, offering a first look at the long-awaited sequel to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s zombie apocalypse film series.

“28 Years Later” will be released on June 20, 2025 and, as the title suggests, is set almost three decades after the virus first spread around the world. Here is the official synopsis:

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and Oscar-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for “28 Years Later,” a frightening new story set in the world created by “28 Days Later.” It’s been nearly three decades since the Rage virus escaped from a biological weapons lab, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to survive among the infected. One of these survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

The trailer opens with a disturbing look at a group of children watching the British children’s television show Teletubbies (unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it ends well for them). We then fast forward 28 years later, and a small town of people living on an island and governed by community roles. Obviously, not everything is as it seems.

Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, armed with a bow and arrow, set off from the island on an unknown mission alongside teenage character Alfie Williams. As you might expect, things don’t go according to plan and the couple escape into a house containing what looks like a bound and gagged zombie.

The trailer contains all sorts of spooky footage, suggesting that humans are just as much of a threat as the zombies. There are what look like mutated zombies, and maybe even mutated humans. The trailer plays with a rather disturbing performance of “Boots,” English author Rudyard Kipling’s 1903 poem that imagines the repetitive thoughts of a marching British Army infantryman.

Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return for “28 Years Later,” but, as a Sony executive teased, “in surprising and growing ways.” There’s a shot in the trailer that shows a zombie that looks a lot like Murphy. Could he reprise his role in this way?

“28 Days Later” was one of his breakout roles in 2002, in which Murphy played Jim, a bicycle courier who awoke from a coma to find himself in post-apocalyptic London after an aggression-triggering virus caused society to collapse. Murphy did not return for 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, which featured a different cast of characters.

We first learned that it was 28 years later was officially given the green light in January alongside plans for revival a trilogy. Additionally, IGN previously learned that The Marvels and Candyman director Nia DaCosta has been in talks with her Directed the second film in the trilogy.
