Jamie Foxx explains everything about “Mystery Illness” in the Netflix special.

SPOILER ALERT! This story contains spoilers for the Netflix stand-up special Jamie Foxx: What happened was…

“What happened was…” a tearful Jamie Foxx begins to say a few minutes into his first stand-up special since being struck by a “mystery illness” in April 2023.

After being brought on stage by his daughter Corrine Foxx, the comedian revealed all about his medical emergency and the aftermath.

“It’s a mystery, we still don’t know exactly what happened to me,” he said. “I had a bad headache and asked my boy for an aspirin. Before I could get the aspirin, I walked out. I don’t remember 20 days. What they told me was that they took me to the first doctor, gave me a cortisone shot and sent me home. I don’t know if you can make Yelps for doctors, but that’s half a star. My sister said “No”. She was six feet tall and full of love when she said there was something wrong with my brother.”

After paying tribute to his sister Deidra Dixon, Foxx said she took him to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, which “got me back together.” He met Dr. Schuette, a white doctor wearing an LA Lakers jersey. “He said, ‘He has a brain bleed that led to a stroke,'” he added. “They had me operate… your life doesn’t flash before your face, it was strangely peaceful.”

In between tearful moments, Foxx danced to prove he’s “still sexy,” repeating the words “Atlanta saved my life” over and over again.

He also referenced Sean “Diddy” Combs and Katt Williams, who said in his own Netflix special, “Never in the history of medicine has there been a mystery illness. “A mystery illness means your ass is fine.”

“Katt Williams got involved,” Foxx said. “Katt will say 2,000 things that don’t make sense, but then say four things that do, and add sir at the end.”

Foxx announced that he woke up on May 4, 2023. “When I woke up I was in a wheelchair and couldn’t walk. Jamie Foxx doesn’t get strokes. That’s an old man, shit,” he said.

Then he talked about his rehab in Chicago. He talked about protecting his “pickle” from the nurse, his conversations with God, difficulty wiping his own butt, and impressions of Mike Tyson (“I fight Jake Paul, Logan Paul, RuPaul”), Dave Chappelle, Jay Z, Donald Trump (“I like black people, they eat dogs”).

“If I can stay funny, I can stay alive,” he repeated during the recording before beginning to sing at the piano.

He joked about being called a clone online and said that even though he was spotted on a boat rescuing a woman’s lost handbag, trolls first believed he was still alive when he was with a white woman had been spotted.

“To all the people on the internet who are still calling me a clone after watching this special, I have one thing to say: Fuck you,” he said.
