Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, 56, has spoken out about a near-fatal medical emergency he experienced in April 2023 while filming Back in Action with Cameron Diaz. In his Netflix comedy special “What Had Happened Was…”, Foxx shared an emotional account of the brain hemorrhage and stroke that left his family fearing for his life.

What started as a severe headache quickly escalated into a critical situation. Foxx’s sister, Deidra Dixon, sensed something was seriously wrong after an initial doctor’s visit in Atlanta failed to determine the severity of his condition. Acting on instinct, Dixon rushed Foxx to Piedmont Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain hemorrhage that required immediate surgery to save his life. Foxx called the medical team “angels” who “put me back together.”

During the operation, Dixon knelt outside the operating room and prayed as doctors fought to save her brother. Describing the surreal experience of being unconscious, Foxx shared how he imagined a tunnel, but added humor by joking about seeing Sean “Puffy” Combs at the end of the tunnel.

Foxx woke up in a wheelchair in May and didn’t know what had happened. Doctors warned that while a full recovery was possible, the coming year was likely to be the most difficult for him. Despite the discouraging prognosis, Foxx used his sense of humor and faith as driving forces. “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive,” he recalled, crediting physical therapists, a psychiatrist and his renewed Christian faith with helping him persevere.

Foxx’s Netflix special captures his resilience and gratitude, highlighting his journey from near-death to recovery. With the release of “Back in Action” on January 17, Foxx’s story is a testament to the power of faith, humor and determination to overcome life’s toughest challenges.
