Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx has spoken out about the medical emergency he faced last year, revealing he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

The Hollywood star opened up about the struggles he faced with his health last year in a Netflix special released on Tuesday called “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was.”

“It’s a mystery,” he said. “We still don’t know exactly what happened to me.”

“On April 11, I had a bad headache and asked my boy for an aspirin. And I quickly realized that in a medical emergency, your guys don’t know what the hell to do,” he said.

“Before I could get the aspirin, I walked out,” he said. “I don’t remember 20 days.”

Foxx thanked his sister, who he said was “nothing but pure love,” for driving him around Atlanta to find a hospital.

They ended up at Piedmont Hospital, where a doctor told them that Foxx had a brain hemorrhage that led to a stroke and that he would die without surgery, the actor said.

After the surgery, doctors said Foxx may make a full recovery, “but it will be the worst year of his life,” Foxx said.

Foxx’s family kept him away from the public because he was “so dizzy” that his head was swaying back and forth, and his daughter was worried that people would turn him into an internet meme if they saw his condition. he said.

He remembers waking up on May 4 in a wheelchair, unable to walk, and reacting in shock when his friend told him he had suffered a stroke.

“Jamie Foxx doesn’t get strokes,” the actor recalled.

He was then flown to rehab in Chicago, where he was told to give up the “arrogant” act if he wanted to make a full recovery.

The actor was hospitalized in April 2023 after suffering a then-undisclosed health scare while filming a Netflix film in Atlanta.

When he was hospitalized, his daughter Corinne Foxx said on social media that her father had suffered a “medical complication,” but those close to him remained largely tight-lipped about the actor’s condition, in keeping with his penchant for privacy .

In July 2023, Foxx posted an Instagram video update in which he addressed speculation about what led to his hospitalization, but did not reveal any details about what happened.

“I know a lot of people were waiting or wanted to hear updates, but to be honest, I just didn’t want you to see me like that, man,” he said in the video. “I want you to see me laugh, have fun, party, crack a joke, do a movie or TV show. I didn’t want you to see me with the tubes coming out and me trying to figure out if I was going to make it.”

Foxx posted another health update on his verified social media in August 2023.

“You see a man who is grateful…finally starting to feel like myself…” he wrote at the time. “It’s been an unexpected dark journey…but I can see the light.”

Last summer, in a video shared on TikTok, the “Ray” actor told a crowd of well-wishers that his problem started with a “severe headache” and then “disappeared for 20 days.” In that video, he was seen sharing that he “can’t remember anything.”
