Amani Oruwariye experiences his Leon Lett moment

November 25, 1993. Thanksgiving Day. Dolphins Cowboys. Ice storm.

Miami attempts a potentially game-winning field goal. The kick is blocked. The ball crosses the line of scrimmage. Leon Lett rushes in and tries to restore it. He touches it. The Dolphins are getting it back.

Miami kicks another field goal, makes it and wins.

Many immediately thought of this infamous moment after Amani Oruwariye performed the punt-block version of the Lett play 31 years later.

This time it extended the Bengals’ winning streak. And the loss dashed the Cowboys’ already slim playoff hopes.

Amazingly, former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman — who played for Dallas in 1993 and hugged Michael Irvin in a cutaway shot after the blocked field goal — didn’t mention the Lett moment. He later said on SportsCenter that he had thought about it but didn’t want to bring it up.

To that we say, “Why the hell not?” It’s a historic moment that involves the same special teams principle, the same team in the same (kind of) city.

The Cowboys radio show I mentioned it immediately. Aikman should have done it.

However, the mistake doesn’t quite reach the same magnitude as touching a blocked field goal or punt after it has crossed the line of scrimmage.

For the 1993 Cowboys, the loss to the Dolphins was the final Dallas loss of the year. In time, they won their second straight Super Bowl. It could be the last Dallas loss of the year for the 2024 Cowboys. But the year likely won’t extend past the final week of the regular season.
