Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns overcome injury scares in win over Raptors

First Scottie Barnes. Then Karl-Anthony Towns. Finally, Jalen Brunson. Something is in the waters of Toronto. Or maybe something new is in the air.

Barnes had not played for three weeks early in the season before severely spraining his ankle in a collision with Towns in the third quarter on Monday night. He hopped on one foot from the field through the hallways of the Scotiabank Arena to the home locker room, never returning and probably missing some time.

Towns also needed help shortly afterward as he twisted his ankle on a drive to the rim.

And Brunson?

Every heart in New York City skipped a beat when the Knicks’ captain and floor general tripped over a fan sitting courtside and gingerly walked straight to the locker room. He returned to the bench at the start of the fourth quarter and re-entered the game with 6:35 left in regulation.

Crisis averted. The Knicks returned safely from their trip north.

And after a rocky start, they returned with another record in the win column, earning a 113-108 victory over the Raptors on Monday. After losing to the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, the Knicks are back on their regular schedule. They have won five of their last six games and 10 of their last 13 games.

And toward the end of the fourth quarter, they began to separate a bit after Brunson came out of the locker room, stepped one foot back on the floor and fouled Toronto’s Davion Mitchell for a four-point play before letting his left shooting arm hang in the air for at least 10 seconds. He finished the night with 20 points and 11 assists.

Towns returned to the rotation after missing the Pistons’ game due to so-called patellar tendinopathy in his left knee and finished the game with 24 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.

He scored the game-winning baskets, first after a timeout in which he shielded Brunson and then rolled hard to the rim, where he was briefly unguarded as two Raptors defenders tried to trap the Knicks’ All-Star guard . And on the following possession, with less than 10 seconds left in regulation, he hit a three-pointer to bring the Knicks within five.

His baskets increased his Toronto career record to 1-8.
