Mark Gastineau accuses Brett Favre of going into hiding for Michael Strahan

Mark Gastineau accuses Brett Favre of going into hiding for Michael Strahan

It appears that Mark Gastineau is blaming Brett Favre for not being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Favre faced the former Jet and former NFL single-season sack record holder, who is still mad at the ex-Packer for “taking a leap” when Michael Strahan broke his sack record in 2002.

During the 2023 Chicago Sports Spectacular, Gastineau confronted Favre while filming the upcoming 30 for 30 documentary “The Next York Sack Exchange” with ESPN.

Favre extends his hand for a handshake, which is not returned by the Jets legend.

“How are you,” Favre asks, which Gastineau also ignores, who says, “When you fell in love with him (Strahan).”

“I want to get my bag back,” Gastineau says twice as Favre looks shocked.

“You would probably hurt me,” Favre replies.

“Well, I don’t care, you hurt me,” Gastineau says several times as Favre walks away from the interaction, confused.

Gastineau, 68, was present on Jan. 6, 2002, when Strahan broke the record in the 2001 season finale and accused Favre of making a jump so his friend and the star player could take the record.

The former member of the famous “New York Sack Exchange” set the record with 22 sacks in 1984.

In recent years, Gastineau has battled cancer and dementia, among other things.

“Do you know how long I thought about (not being in the Hall of Fame)? A long time,” Gastineau says while watching the documentary.

He added: “The NFL should have stopped that and said, ‘No, that wasn’t a sack.’ He took away my record. Everyone will tell you that Favre took a leap… and everyone knows it.”

Favre has denied making a jump in the past, although Troy Aikman said that “(Strahan) got a chance.”

“Rolls right and gets sacked by Michael Strahan,” longtime Giants radio commentator Bob Papa said on the broadcast. “Favre ran straight towards him. It almost looked like it was a planned play. They are friends. He faked the handoff, rolled to his right and then just slid down in front of Strahan.”

Favre said he was “called out” by offensive coordinator Mike Sherman for that play after the game.

“I don’t care if he gets it or not,” Favre said on #10Questions with Kyle Brandt in 2021.

When Gastineau denounced Favre, his ex-teammates, including Abdul Salaam and Marty Lyons, called him a selfish player in his prime in the trailer.

“If you don’t want to admit that you’re selfish, that’s fine. That’s my opinion, you were selfish,” Lyons said.

In the years since Strahan secured the official sack title, Gastineau has had to settle for a tie for third place on the single-season list when Steelers pass rusher TJ Watt in 2021 beat Strahan’s 22.5- Sack mark reached.
