Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell stumbled on Tuesday, sprained his wrist and suffered “a minor cut to his face,” his office said in a statement.

The incident is the latest in a series of high-profile health issues for the 82-year-old Kentucky Republican.

“Leader McConnell stumbled after lunch. He suffered a minor cut on his face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to move forward with his schedule,” a McConnell spokesman said in a statement.

Senators told CNN that McConnell fell at the Capitol, and new Senate Majority Leader John Thune told CNN that McConnell was “fine.”

“He’s fine, he’s in his office, and any other questions about Senator McConnell I’m directing to staff,” Thune said at a Republican news conference where the Kentucky Republican was absent.

McConnell fell as he walked from a closed GOP luncheon at the Capitol to the Senate floor, according to a source familiar with the event. The source also pointed out that McConnell has always had a weak leg since he contracted polio as a child.

Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, a doctor who accompanied McConnell after his fall, also said the Kentucky Republican was doing well, noting that he “walked back to his office from lunch” after the incident.

A medical team entered McConnell’s office shortly after he entered, and an ambulance was parked outside the Capitol. Paramedics entered the building and left shortly afterwards.

Last year, the longtime Senate Republican leader was treated for a concussion after falling in a Washington, D.C. hotel. CNN later reported that McConnell fell several times that year.

There were also two incidents last year in which McConnell briefly appeared to freeze while speaking to reporters – once in Kentucky and another time on Capitol Hill.

McConnell will remain Senate GOP leader until the new Congress begins in early January.

At that point, Thune, who was chosen by the Senate GOP conference to succeed McConnell, will take over.

McConnell is expected to hold his Senate seat until his term expires in January 2027.
