Winter weather warnings in 8 states as 12 inches of snow is imminent

Thanksgiving is expected to be wet and cold for millions of Americans across the Northeast as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of winter weather warnings and advisories.

Heavy snow is expected across New England and beyond today, which could disrupt holiday travel plans across the region. From northern Pennsylvania into Maine, snow and rain is expected to extend throughout Thursday into Friday morning.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for most of Maine, with 5 to 10 inches of snow expected from 4 p.m. ET Thursday through Friday morning. Higher amounts are expected in Piscataquis County to southeast Aroostook County.

“Periods of locally heavy snowfall may result in rapid accumulations of snow,” the NWS warning states. “The weight of heavy, wet snow on tree branches can bring down power lines and cause sporadic power outages. Travel could be very difficult as heavy snow reduces visibility and wet roads freeze under fresh snow.”

Similar amounts of snow are expected in neighboring New Hampshire, with a warning in effect for Sullivan, Carroll and Grafton counties. In addition to possible power outages, driving conditions across the region could also become dangerous.

Winter storm warnings are also active in Vermont’s Bennington, Orange, Rutland, Windham and Windsor counties. Up to 12 inches of snow is expected in Bennington and Windham from early Thursday morning through 1 a.m. Friday, with Thanksgiving travel likely to be impacted.

Parts of central and eastern New York are under multiple winter storm warnings, and several warnings have also been issued in the southern part of the state. About 25 centimeters of snow is forecast for the eastern parts, where it could snow at a rate of 2.5 centimeters per hour on Thursday afternoon. Additional warnings are in effect for Oneida, Madison, Chenango and Otsego counties.

Across the state line in Pennsylvania, winter weather advisories are in effect for northern parts of the state, including Potter, Tioga, Lycoming and Sullivan counties, where up to 3 to 4 inches is expected at higher elevations.

Elsewhere in Bradford, Susquehanna and Wayne counties, snow is forecast from early morning until 10 a.m. before rain in the late morning and afternoon. Motorists are asked to slow down and exercise caution when driving.

For Massachusetts, a winter weather advisory is active for Berkshire County, where 2 to 8 inches of “wet snow” is likely. Snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour during the afternoon hours, with some Thanksgiving trips likely to be affected.

A single winter weather advisory is in effect for St. Louis County in Minnesota along the Canadian border. This area is likely to see 2 to 4 inches of snow.

“Lake effect snow showers off Rainy Lake are expected to produce conditions ranging from locally moderate snowfall with rapid visibility loss to dry weather just a few miles away,” the NWS statement said. “Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility and road conditions.”

Finally, there are two winter weather warnings in Alaska, one for Petersburg Borough and one for Hyder, where “a strengthening system from the west will push warm air northward with a wintry mix Wednesday afternoon.”

“Wet and dense” snow is expected before more cold air moves in and the snow becomes increasingly loose and drier.
