Mark Gastineau still harbors resentment over Brett Favre ditching for Michael Strahan

23 years ago, Packers quarterback Brett Favre took a leap to give Giants defensive end Michael Strahan the single-season sack record. Everyone knows it.

Everyone, including Mark Gastineau.

The former Jets pass rusher, who held the record before Favre handed it over to Strahan, still holds a grudge over that moment. The proof appears in the upcoming 30 for 30 documentary about the New York Sack Exchange.

Last year, Gastineau and Favre interacted at a memorabilia exhibit. It begins with Favre approaching Gastineau in a friendly and unsuspecting manner. Gastineau was not friendly.

Favre tells Gastineau he thinks they’ve met before.

“Yeah right – when you fell in love with him” says Gastineau, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “I will get my bag back. I’ll get my sack back, dude.”

Favre believes this means Gastineau Favre will be fired.

“You would probably hurt me,” Favre says.

“Well, I don’t care,” Gastineau says. “You hurt me. You hurt me! Do you hear me?”

“Yes, I understand you,” says Favre.

“You really hurt me,” Gastineau says. “You really hurt me, Brett.”

Favre didn’t do it to hurt Gastineau. Favre did Strahan a favor. Gastineau is also upset with the man who profited from the false dismissal.

He believes Strahan and Favre were conspiring. Gastineau plans to let Strahan know about it at some point.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time – many, many years,” Gastineau told ESPN.com. “I only have one man left to go to.”

TJ Watt has since set the all-time record of 22.5. Which means Watt alone holds the record for everyone involved.
