Is Belichick’s pursuit of a UNC job “short-sighted”? The conversation between Curran and Perry originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

NFL enthusiasts have been pondering the possible landing spots for Bill Belichick since his legendary tenure with the New England Patriots came to an end last winter. It turns out that attempts to predict the six-time Super Bowl champion’s next destination may prove futile.

Belichick had a shocking interview for the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina and, according to NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran, there’s a “more than 50-50 chance” he takes the job. This is particularly surprising considering that as an NFL head coach, he is just 15 wins away from breaking Don Shula’s record.

While we wait for more Belichick-UNC updates, Curran and fellow NBC Sports Boston Pats insider Phil Perry discussed the possibility of Belichick leading a college program on a new episode of the Patriots Talk Podcast. Perry suspected it might be a short-sighted move for the 72-year-old to pursue the job.

“Do you think this is short-sighted of Bill Belichick?” Perry asked. “Shouldn’t he be willing to play along a little bit given the way things turned out in New England? I understand wanting things to go your way in New England after winning six Super Bowls here. It is well within your rights to request this. But for another team that doesn’t have that experience with you – they obviously understand what your resume is, but they don’t necessarily have that experience with you and quite frankly, that experience and that resume that you posted last several years in New England wasn’t great when it came to the breadth of your program.

“In my opinion it would be best for him to stay in the professional game. You know that. They generally pay better. For me it would just be much more fascinating. … That would be it for me.” The better move is to just be willing to play with the presidents and CEOs and everyone who stands between you and the owners rather than going to UNC – which, frankly, no one really does interested – just so you can run your own program.

Curran believes there is a disconnect between Belichick and NFL owners, who may view the longtime head coach the same way he viewed talented players who were past their prime.

“I think he misunderstands the fact that just like the amount of money he would have offered a Reggie Wayne or a Torry Holt or anyone else that he got at the end of his career, and his expectations of that person too “He’s the answer to the same declining skills and declining performance that he’s shown,” Curran said.

“And that’s why I think the NFL looks at him with a slightly jaundiced eye. That’s why his own owners in New England looked at him with a slightly jaundiced look.”
