DALLAS – The Nationals are in the loop.

Washington was the big winner in Tuesday night’s Major League Baseball draft lottery, held at the Winter Meetings for the third straight year, and won the first overall pick in next summer’s draft.

The first round of the 2025 draft will play out as follows, with the numbers in parentheses indicating where the teams ranked in the lottery odds and what their chances of winning the top overall pick were:

This year, the odds of receiving the No. 1 seed ranged from 22.45 percent for the eligible teams with the two worst records (Rockies and Marlins) to 0.27 percent for the team with the best record among the non-playoff teams. Club (D-Backs). .

Postseason teams did not participate in the lottery and 16 of the 18 non-playoff teams were eligible this season, excluding the White Sox and Athletics. Teams that are “payor clubs” — those that give revenue-sharing funds — are not allowed to be selected in consecutive lotteries, and Chicago went fifth overall in 2024. 23, are ineligible because “payee clubs” – teams that receive revenue share funds – cannot be selected in three consecutive lotteries.
