While every type of coat on the market today has its merits, none are more reliably stylish – or classier – than the humble top coat. Its simple, straightforward design makes the wool coat almost timeless. The strong shoulder area gives the wearer a cool, androgynous look, which I personally really like.

The timeless look was one that Holmes channeled throughout her entire outfit. When it came time to shop for accessories, she opted for elevated favorites like a pair of aviator sunglasses and a streetwear sneaker classic: Nike Air Force 1s. While Holmes has dozens of sneakers in her arsenal—from Ponies to New Balances—Nike’s perennial It sneakers put her in line with fashion’s biggest shoe collectors. Since their debut in the 1980s, they’ve become a favorite of everyone from supermodels (like Naomi Campell) to the sports stars who first wore them.

Holmes’ handbag of choice was a taupe suede bag with a Birkin-style belt detail. It touched on the wild suede bag trend fresh off the runways.

So far, Holmes’ fall look suggests she’s on a well-deserved break from her favorite $2,400 Khaite bag, considering she’s been wearing anything but that style in recent weeks.

The real star of her outfit, however, is the elegant-looking wool coat.
