The FBI issues a statement as mysterious drone sightings reach New York

The FBI has released a statement regarding the ongoing mysterious drone sightings that have now spread from New Jersey to New York and is calling on the public to cooperate with their investigation.

This came as residents in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, reported drones on Sunday evening, joining numerous sightings across New Jersey in recent weeks.

The sightings, which began in November, have alarmed residents of neighboring New Jersey.

Drones have reportedly been spotted near Picatinny Arsenal, a US military installation, and President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course. In response, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily restricted drone flights over these locations.

“We understand the concern and are doing everything we can to find out what is going on,” a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Newark field office, which is leading the investigation, told PIX11 News. “We really don’t have much information to provide at the moment.”

Newsweek FBI Newark emailed for comment.

Diane Atkins, a Brooklyn resident, captured videos of the objects near the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge and described them as loud and numerous. “There had to be a total of 10, maybe 12 of these things,” Atkins told PIX11. “Definitely no planes, and there were too many of them.”

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis shared Atkins’ videos on X and questioned the lack of information from authorities. “The FAA, FBI, Department of Homeland Security and NYPD should let the public know what is going on here,” she wrote.

“Are they drones and why are they flying over sensitive facilities and infrastructure? After the Chinese spy balloon, everyone can understand why the community is worried!”

Malliotakis was referring to an incident in 2023 when the U.S. Air Force shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina, a week after it entered U.S. airspace.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy weighed in on the situation Monday, saying that while authorities had not identified any immediate threats, they were taking the sightings seriously.

“This is something we take absolutely seriously,” Murphy said during a press conference on Monday, adding: “These are obviously, from what I understand, very sophisticated. As soon as you see them, they go dark.”

Murphy said state and federal authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security, are actively investigating. He noted that 49 sightings were reported on Sunday.

A viral video purportedly showing a drone crash circulated online, but there was no official confirmation.

Florham Park Police Chief Joseph Orlando called the drones’ presence “inherently nefarious,” although authorities maintain there is no immediate threat.

Unusual phenomena have been linked to the sightings, including a family’s report of their car’s clock changing while a drone hovered overhead.

Residents were asked to report any sightings and share any videos or photos from the flights by calling the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or submitting online at [email protected] .
