According to the latest report, the Mavericks could cut ties with Klay Thompson in favor of Heat All-Star

The Dallas Mavericks have been on fire, winning 11 of their last 12 games.

Dallas could look to sign a six-time All-Star with ties to the area to help them realize their championship dreams. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Jimmy Butler is interested in joining the Mavs if he and the Miami Heat decide to part ways.

“The Heat are open to listening to offers for Butler and making a deal if the proposal is right,” league sources told ESPN, and Butler’s agent Bernie Lee has suggested in league circles that Butler is open to targets like two of Texas open teams (Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks) and the Golden State Warriors,” Charania wrote. “Butler is from Houston, Texas. Above all, it is assumed that in every profession he prefers a title contender who can win immediately.”

This is what a planned trade could look like.

Suggested Trading Details:

Mavericks received: Jimmy Butler, Thomas Bryant

Heat reception: Maxi Kleber, Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, Naji Marshall, Jaden Hardy, 2025 first-round pick, 2031 first-round pick

This trade works financially, but it’s questionable at best whether the Heat will want to add to Thompson’s salary for the next two seasons afterward, especially when his trade value is at an all-time low.

Plus, the Mavs likely have bigger plans for one of their latest acquisitions. Thompson chose Dallas over the Los Angeles Lakers or a return to the Golden State Warriors because he believes he can help the defending Western Conference champions.

This proposed deal would also require the Mavs to part ways with a big player they are reluctant to give up.

Taking all of this into account, this trade probably doesn’t make sense for either franchise unless the Heat can redirect Gafford for future assets. The Mavs could also simply wait for Butler to become a free agent this summer.
