U.S. Capitol Police have arrested a person who Rep. Nancy Mace said “physically attacked” her on Tuesday, the South Carolina Republican said in a post on X.

“I was physically attacked on Capitol grounds this evening because of my fight to protect women. Capitol Police arrested him. All the violence and threats continue to prove our point. Women deserve security. Your threats will not stop my fight for women!” said Mace.

“A new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and everything will heal well,” she also posted.

When asked about Mace’s claim, Capitol Police said they received a report from a member of the congressional office about an incident at the Rayburn Office Building shortly after 6 p.m. Officers and agents from the Threat Assessment Unit located a suspect, arrested him and charged him with assaulting a government official, the agency said.

Last month, the South Carolina Republican made headlines when she introduced a resolution banning transgender women from using the women’s restrooms at the Capitol and filed broader legislation that would apply to every federal building and school funded by the federal government. The moves followed the election of Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride of Delaware, who will be the first out transgender person to serve in Congress.

After the fall of the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade As we head into 2022 and her party’s efforts to retain female voters, Mace has often said she is looking for ways to show that the GOP is “pro-women.”
