As movie theaters have seemingly struggled to survive and remain relevant during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the moviegoing experience has recently been re-evaluated as sacred and necessary, especially in the eyes of filmmakers promoting their films. Christopher Nolan’s newly signed deal with Universal Pictures is a direct result of trying to maintain the theatrical experience following the fiasco of Warner Bros.’s botched 2020 release of his film principle. However, not every creative feels that their work is okay if it isn’t released in a theater.

Zack Snyder particularly had something to say about the cinematic versus streaming experience. In an interview with Wired, The 300 Expressing his feelings on the issue and his belief that every creative should be considered an artist, regardless of whether their project is viewed on the big screen or at home, the director said:

“It feels rude to say I’m not an artist when my film isn’t in the cinema. If you’re the streamer, you’re paying for the film, and if right at the start of our conversation you say, “This is our format and probably 250 million people are going to watch it on their phones,” then I need to know that that’s the reality . And if that’s the case, whatever happens after that should be fine with me.”

Given Zack Snyder’s overall deal with the popular streaming service Netflix, his comments about watching movies and TV shows on a phone are not surprising. The director’s recent films have been primarily focused on streaming, including his Rebel Moon films and Army of the Dead. The director previously celebrated the theater experience with special IMAX premieres Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Before its release, the medium and premium format was celebrated.

Zack Snyder’s comments highlight a possible divide between directors in the film industry, but remain pragmatic. Although film distribution has evolved (and is still evolving) over the years, it’s hard to blame Snyder for his opinion, especially since streamers like Netflix have an impressive global reach that could hypothetically help enhance the stories filmmakers tell , clearly making a larger audience, even if it’s not in the format that some auteur-directors prefer.
