Police say Congresswoman Nancy Mace was attacked at the U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON – A person is facing charges for attacking a congresswoman on Capitol grounds Tuesday night.

According to the United States Capitol Police (USCP), 33-year-old James McIntyre of Illinois assaulted a congressman in the Rayburn House Office Building. According to the USCP, McIntyre underwent a security clearance before entering the congressional buildings. McIntyre is charged with “assaulting a government official.”

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) posted hours later Mace claimed the attack was due to her position on trans rights, which she opposes and frequently posts about on social media.

“I was physically attacked on Capitol grounds this evening because of my fight to protect women,” Mace said on Instagram.

After Sarah McBride of Delaware became the first transgender person elected to Congress, Mace introduced a resolution to restrict McBride’s access to women’s restrooms in the Capitol and House office buildings. Mace said the bill was specifically aimed at McBride, who was elected to the House of Representatives last month.

McBride called the effort a way to “distract from the real issues facing this country.”

“I’m not here to argue about bathrooms. “I’m here to fight for Delawareans and reduce costs for families,” the new member said. “Like all members, I will follow the rules laid out by Speaker Johnson, even if I disagree with them.”
