Police arrest suspect accused of attacking Nancy Mace on Capitol grounds

U.S. Capitol Police said Tuesday that they had arrested a person accused of attacking Rep. Nancy Mace, R-R-S.C.

The suspect, James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois, is charged with assault on a government official.

Mace said on X Tuesday night that she was “physically attacked at the Capitol tonight” by someone she said was a transgender rights advocate.

“A new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it will heal just fine,” Mace said, adding that “violence and threats against my life will only cause me to double in size.”

Capitol Police, asked for comment, did not provide any information about the suspect and did not respond to questions about whether or not the suspect was a transgender rights advocate.

In a statement about the incident, police said a House member’s office reported an incident at the Rayburn House office building and that officers had “located the suspect.”

McIntyre was screened before entering the building, which was open to the public at the time of the incident, the statement said.

Last month, Mace introduced a measure to ban lawmakers and House staff from “using single-sex facilities other than those consistent with their biological sex.” She said she was responding to the election of Sarah McBride as the first openly transgender congresswoman in November.

Last week, demonstrators opposing Mace’s measure protested outside a House office building.
