In both Path of Exile And Path of Exile 2Currency is used for a variety of things – and there’s a lot more than just gold to worry about. Although gold is important, there are others Path of Exile 2 Currency items are used almost exclusively to upgrade your equipment, from adding sockets to changing modifiers to improving the rarity and quality of weapons and equipment.

Path of Exile 2: How to Equip Support Gems

In Path of Exile 2, Support Gems work a little differently than they did in PoE 1.

There are many currencies Path of Exile 2but they are all linked together to give players multiple ways to obtain powerful items. Essentially, Path of Exile 2 Currencies are a type of crafting and upgrading system, not necessarily items you trade with vendors, and each has a unique effect. Some currencies can be created over time using shards, while others can only be collected from monster drops – some of the most exclusive currencies can also only be found in the very late game and post-game content.

Major Currencies – Modifiers, Quality, Sockets and more

These currencies can be found randomly throughout your adventures in the main campaign. First of all, you mainly get low-level Orbs of Transmutation, Augmentation, Royal Orbs, and equipment quality upgrade materials, which are the most common PoE2 Currency items.

Later in the campaign and as you near the end of the game, you will find some higher tier items (such as Orbs of the Perfect Jeweler, Vaal Orbs, and Orbs of Alchemy).

Spend money on merchant items and gambling, or on nodes in the passive skill tree

Orb of transmutation

Transforms a normal item into a magic item with a random modifier

Orb of Reinforcement

Adds a random modifier to a magic item (maximum 2).

Orb of Alchemy

Upgrades a normal item into a rare item with 4x random modifiers

Ball of chance

Transforms a normal item into a magical, rare, or unique item with appropriate modifiers

Royal ball

Transforms a magic item into a rare item with a new random modifier

Sublime sphere

Adds a random modifier to a rare item (maximum 6).

Chaos Orb

Randomly replaces a modifier with a new modifier for all equipment except Uniques

Bullet of annulment

Randomly removes a modifier from the selected element

Small jeweler’s ball

Adds a support gem socket to a skill gem slot. Works with skill gems with 2x support gem sockets (standard)

Large jeweler’s ball

Adds a support gem socket to a skill gem slot. Works with skill gems with 3x support gem sockets

Perfect jeweler’s ball

Adds a support gem socket to a skill gem slot. Works with skill gems with 4x support gem sockets (maximum 5x support gem sockets)

Artisan’s Orb

Adds a socket to equipment (maximum 2x for two-handed weapons and body armor, 1x for all other equipment)

Arcanist’s Eraser

Increases the quality of a wand, staff, or scepter. Useful for witch and sorceress classes.

Weaponsmith’s Scrap

Increases the quality of armor parts

Blacksmith’s grindstone

Increases the quality of a combat weapon (not a wand, staff or scepter)

Glassblower ball

Improves the quality of a bottle

Gemstone cutter prism

Improves the quality of a gem

Vaal Orb

Corrupts an item and grants a random effect, from changing nothing to increasing stats to granting an additional rune socket – but when used, the item can no longer be improved

Transforms a normal item into a magical item with a guaranteed modifier

Greater essence

Transforms a magic item into a rare item with a guaranteed modifier

Path of Exile 2 Endgame and Exclusive Currencies

These five currencies can only be purchased in the endgame and during certain endgame activities.

The Catalyst, Distilled Emotions, and Omen currencies are exclusive to the Rupture, Delirium, and Ritual endgame events, while upgrade materials can be farmed for Essences and Greater Monster Essences.

Path of Exile 2 Currency Shards

You can craft currency items Path of Exile 2 Offers with shards. These shards can be acquired as normal monster and treasure loot, or obtained by disenchanting or salvaging certain types of items. You get Transmutation and Royal Shards for disenchanting magic and rare items, respectively.


You can salvage equipment with rune sockets to craft Artisan’s Shards, which create a full Artisan’s Orb for a stack of 10x.
