A week after the Sixers team meeting, little has changed for a 3-13 team

From the outside looking in, it appears that nothing has really changed for the better for the 76ers.

They had a well-attended team meeting after the heavy away loss against the Miami Heat last Monday. The highlight of this meeting was Tyrese Maxey challenging Joel Embiid to show up to team activities on time. The players also told coach Nick Nurse that they wanted to be coached harder. The coaches, in turn, said they wanted the players to contribute with determination and attention to detail.

Perhaps another meeting is in order after the 3-13 Sixers put together a lackluster 125-99 performance against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center.

Some people will point out that the Sixers are playing without Joel Embiid (left knee swelling), Paul George (left knee bruise) and Kyle Lowry (strained right hip). The team seemed lifeless at times against the Clippers (11-7). The Sixers played like a team that didn’t want to put in any extra effort and wanted to be dominated at the same time.

The 26-point defeat was the most lopsided loss of the season. There were even some moments that were reminiscent of The Process-era Sixers tank teams. And that wasn’t the expected outcome after their cordial meeting.

The Sixers have fallen to 1-2 since then and are expected to have a tough time defeating the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

How do you think his team reacted that night?

“The only thing you can say about tonight is that it’s really disappointing,” he said. “I think, again, I was pretty hopeful because that group, even kind of that group, when we played Cleveland (without Embiid and George), we played well, you know? We moved the ball, guarded it hard and played hard. Same group the other night against Brooklyn. A pretty hard-fought game, moving the ball, playing hard. They just didn’t have any left in them.

“Tonight…the energy and the physicality were gone, man. I picked a hard night so everyone could burn off some energy, right?”

The nurse talked about focusing his team and re-energizing them. The Sixers will recover on Monday and prepare for their tough task against the Rockets (12-6). The goal is to get the Sixers back to playing with the energy they showed against the Cavs and Nets.

But the Sixers have tried to come to terms with the fact that the details of the meeting were leaked.

“I mean, it’s difficult when something like this comes to light,” Tyrese Maxey said, “especially when you’re trying to build on it, you know what I mean? We tried to talk to each other and let each other help. Try to help each other. How…we can get better. How…we can get better. Not just as a group but as an organization, but I think people are kind of letting that go.

“We have to let it go. I mean, it is what it is. It came out. Whatever. We have this part figured out and we have to be resilient.”

The Sixers are trying not to panic, knowing there are still 66 games left to play in the season. They know they only have two options. They can lie down and allow teams to have field days against them. Or they can play with some pride and win some games.

“I thought we were going to be the team that went out and fought every night no matter who was on the court,” said Maxey, who returned Wednesday after being sidelined with a right hamstring strain. “I mean, we get it. I was injured. Jo was injured. Kyle was injured. P was injured.

“There are guys in the lineup and outside of it. Yes, we understand that. It’s not ideal, but we can all do one thing every night, from one to fifteen, and go out there, know the game plan, play extremely hard every night, and that’s what we have to do.”
