Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” has been declared the official holiday song of Tennessee

Brenda LeeThe beloved holiday classic “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” was honored and named the “Official Christmas Song of Tennessee” at a ceremony at the Tennessee State Capitol yesterday (December 2).

Lee received a signed proclamation from the governor Bill Lee and representative Jason Powell (D-Nashville) at the special event. Rep. Powell filed the bill last December making the song the state’s official holiday song. The bill passed the state legislature earlier this year and was signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee in April.

“Brenda Lee is a music icon and a true Tennessee treasure. “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree has been spreading holiday cheer around the world for decades and we are proud that their number one song originated in Nashville,” said Representative Jason Powell. “I am thrilled that my legislation has made Brenda Lee’s popular ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ Tennessee’s first official Christmas song.”

“Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” was certified five times platinum by the RIAA and reached one billion streams on Spotify. As of November 2023, “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” was at the top billboard Sixty-five years after the song’s debut, it entered the Hot 100 chart for the first time ever, staying at the top for three weeks. It’s only Lee’s third holiday at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” is also Lee’s third time at No. 1. Lee and her holiday hit now hold the record for the longest climb to the top of the Hot 100 100 like that Johnny MarksThe written tune was released 65 years ago when Lee was just 13 years old.
