Why could Taylor Swift’s Era Tour spell trouble for Ticketmaster?

The huge tour could have a lasting impact on Ticketmaster.

Any way you look at it, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was a huge success. The highest-grossing tour of all time just ended.

Fans around the world spent a lot of money to see Swift show off her skills on stage.

When tickets went on sale in fall 2022, these dedicated fans were ready to buy — there was just one problem: It appeared Ticketmaster wasn’t prepared for the onslaught.

When these tickets went live, there were a ton of problems: the website crashed, fans reported waiting hours for the site to freeze, and the only ones who seemed to be able to snag tickets were the bots. The whole drama caught the attention of Washington, congressional hearings were launched, and eventually the Justice Department sued Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation, saying it was too big and needed to be broken up.

While Live Nation denies this accusation, it is undoubtedly the major player when it comes to live entertainment. Not only does it own Ticketmaster, but it also owns 265 venues. The company is even reportedly investing in the food and beverage brands sold in its venues.

And while the new Trump administration is expected to be friendlier to big business, political observers say Live Nation is so unpopular that Republicans are unlikely to force the Justice Department to drop the lawsuit.
