At that time his daughter Corinne said on social media that the comedian “experienced a medical complication.” fox said later that his daughter, his sister Diedra Dixon and medical personnel saved his life. He said he couldn’t remember nearly three weeks of his life after the unspecified horror.

In his latest special, just released on Netflix, Foxx said he suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke. He said he had been in a coma for 20 days and that his condition was so serious that his family traveled to be at his bedside, even as they worked to keep details of his condition secret.

“I’ve gone to hell and back,” Foxx said.

Foxx said when he woke up from the coma, he was in a wheelchair and couldn’t walk. The Oscar-winning actor said he had to relearn basic functions and rely on nurses for daily needs like showering. Doctors told him that although recovery was possible, it would be a difficult process.

“CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King took part in one of three tapings of the Foxx special. King said he was in “great spirit” during the taping and said she was glad he was able to tell his story.

“He played three nights in Atlanta to a packed audience,” King recalls. “Nobody ever revealed what happened because everyone wanted Jamie to tell it on his own terms.”
