After Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey reportedly called out superstar center Joel Embiid for habitually tardy during a recent team meeting, more revelations about the 2022-23 NBA MVP have come to light.

Appears on FanDuel’s Run it back (h/t HoopsHype), The Athletic’s Sam Amick discussed what he’s heard about Embiid, saying, “I’ll be honest, I knew his professionalism was constantly being questioned around the league and within the organization.”

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported last week that Maxey spoke up during a meeting after the Sixers lost their fourth straight game and took Embiid to task for being late “for everything.”

Sources close to the team told Charania that Embiid and Maxey have a “close friendship” and “have always taken responsibility for each other.”

Another person present at the meeting told Charania that Embiid’s penchant for being late was “the elephant in the room.”

The 30-year-old later criticized the subject of the meeting being made public, telling reporters: “Whoever leaked this is a real bastard. But even then we talked about a lot of things. I don’t want to go into the details, but the whole thing probably lasted 30 seconds.

A league source then told NBA insider Jake Fischer that Embiid was “angry” and was “trying to find the Sixers’ alleged snitch.”

As part of his appearance on Run it backAmick said there was some finger-pointing, with claims that the media was “way too gentle” on the seven-time All-Star and that his issues with unprofessionalism “continued forever.”

Even aside from these issues, the 2024-25 season was a nightmare for Embiid and the Sixers.

After missing 43 games last season primarily due to a knee injury, Embiid has only appeared in four games this season, with most of his absences due to treatment for knee injuries.

Embiid was also suspended three games for shoving a member of the media who mentioned his son and late brother in an article.

When healthy, he has long been one of the NBA’s most dominant players, earning seven All-Star nominations, five All-NBA selections and one MVP award.

Embiid also won the scoring title in both 2022 and 2023 and averaged 34.7 points per game last season, the highest of his career, despite appearing in just 39 contests.

With Embiid having missed most of the 2024-25 season so far, the 76ers are just 3-13, 14th out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference.

Despite making seven straight postseason appearances, playoff success has been elusive for the Sixers as they have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 2001.

Many expected that to change this season with the signing of Paul George to play alongside Embiid and Maxey, but along with Embiid’s absence, George has only played in eight games due to injury.

The 76ers still have plenty of time to turn their season around and establish themselves as Eastern Conference contenders, but the narrative surrounding the team is currently far more negative than anyone could have expected.
