David Bonderman, co-founder of alternative asset manager TPG, dies aged 82

(Reuters) – David Bonderman, the billionaire co-founder of the $239 billion alternative asset management giant TPG, has died at the age of 82, the company said on Wednesday.

Bonderman and Jim Coulter, former Bass Family Office colleagues, founded TPG in 1992 and opened the firm’s first offices in San Francisco.

Today, TPG has a global workforce of over 1,800 employees and invests in a range of sectors including technology, healthcare, real estate and consumer.

The private equity giant went public in early 2022 with a strong market debut, reaching a valuation of over $10 billion. Since then, its market value has increased to $24.3 billion, according to LSEG data.

Bonderman has served on the boards of several corporate giants throughout his career, including automaker General Motors, airline Ryanair and Kite Pharmaceutical.

Born in Los Angeles in 1942, he was also the owner of the National Hockey League’s 32nd expansion franchise, the Seattle Kraken.

Bonderman, affectionately known as “Bondo” to his friends and colleagues, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1966 and was a member of the Harvard Law Review.

He briefly served as an assistant professor at Tulane University Law School before moving to Washington to serve as special assistant to the U.S. Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division during President Lyndon Johnson’s 1968-69 administration.

While studying at the renowned Harvard University, he received the Sheldon Fellowship, which enabled him to undertake a one-year research and discovery trip outside the United States.

He won several awards, including the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award and the Woodrow Wilson Award of Corporate Citizenship.

According to Forbes, Bonderman had a net worth of around $7.4 billion.

He was the majority shareholder of TPG and had been a member of the board since its founding.
