The creator economy is now estimated to be worth $250 billion, and creator-run social media sites, particularly TikTok, have played a large role in catapulting content creation into the large-scale category. Competing platforms are looking for new ways to attract and attract creators to their sites. Notably, Instagram has introduced new features aimed at professionalizing the app for small businesses and creators and changing the way the site recommends content.

Today, Instagram announced the global launch of Trial Reels after experimenting with the new feature back in May. Test Reels allow developers to test new and innovative Reel ideas on new audiences before reaching their follower base.

Test Reels are initially shown only to non-followers so creators can measure performance insights such as views, likes, comments, and shares in the first 24 hours after publishing. After monitoring performance data, creators can determine whether the content is worth sharing with their actual followers.

Creators can share the test video with their followers if they like it, or set Instagram to automatically share it based on the views it receives within the first 72 hours.

The new feature is intended to help creators experiment with new and different content so that their established fan base is not negatively impacted.

According to TechCrunch, Instagram vice president and head of product management Ashley Alexander explained that the idea for test videos came directly from developers’ concerns about the risks of testing ideas that differ from their usual content. “We’ve heard from creators,” Alexander said, “that they don’t always feel comfortable or hesitant to experiment with different types of content because they’ve built a follower base and they want to make sure that’s not the case. “ alienate it.

The feature allows developers to try out different themes, genres and narrative formats without pressure, Alexander added.

Currently this is the only feature of its kind; TikTok does not offer creators the ability to experiment with different content types based on performance analytics. After being criticized in the past for not addressing content creators and influencers when it comes to monetization and for lacking support, Instagram may finally be making changes to benefit creators.

According to Instagram, creators can activate the feature by toggling the “Trial” option after creating a Reel. The reel will only be shared with non-followers and will not appear in the main creator profile grid or in their followers’ Reels tab. However, it’s important to note that a follower could see a test video if a non-follower shares it directly with them.
