Sources: Red Sox complete trade for Garrett Crochet

DALLAS – The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a deal to acquire left-hander Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox, sources told ESPN.

According to sources, catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wilkelman Gonzalez will travel to Chicago for Crochet.

Crochet thrived in his first season with the White Sox last year after moving from a backup role. While the teams had discussed several versions of a deal, talks accelerated after Boston failed in its attempts to sign outfielder Juan Soto, left-hander Max Fried and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi.

The 25-year-old Crochet was dominant over 146 innings this season, striking out 209 while walking just 33. With a fastball that reaches 97 mph, a high-end slider, and a cutter that he added to great effect, Crochet looked like a front-line starter—exactly the kind of player the Red Sox need to recover from a five-year stretch in which they finished last in the American League East three times.

He will join a rotation that includes right-handers Tanner Houck, Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford – and will likely be called up for Boston on Opening Day.

Crochet’s appeal goes beyond its elite stuff and achievements. Because he spent the first four years of his career as a relief pitcher, Crochet’s arbitration salary is far less than that of an elite starting pitcher. He is expected to make around $3 million this year and not become a free agent until after the 2026 season.
