According to outage tracking service Downdetector, users are reporting problems accessing many of Meta’s social media apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger.

According to Downdetector, reports of outages began coming from cities across the U.S. around 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday. Facebook and Instagram users reported having problems accessing the app and website, while Messenger users had problems logging into the service and sending messages.

“We are aware that a technical issue is affecting some users’ access to our apps. We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” a Meta spokesperson told CBS News.

Meta did not disclose what the cause of the problem was, nor did Meta provide a timeline for when it might be fixed.

Tens of thousands of users of every social media service reported problems to Downdetector, with nearly 90,000 problems reported with Facebook as of 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Some Facebook users said they were unable to access the site but were unable to post or like other users’ posts.

“Metaservices, including Facebook and Instagram, are currently experiencing an outage that began at approximately 17:55 UTC and is still ongoing,” Cisco ThousandEyes, a technology services company, wrote on X Wednesday afternoon. “ThousandEyes is detecting internal server errors and timeouts, which may indicate issues with Meta’s backend services. Network connectivity to Meta’s front-end web servers remains unaffected.”

As of 2:45 p.m., thousands of Meta apps users continued to report problems accessing the services.

According to Downdetector, WhatsApp users also reported problems sending messages. WhatsApp, a popular service outside the US for calling other users of the service, has had reports of problems from users in countries such as Argentina and Brazil.

The outage follows on Wednesday widespread problems with Meta’s apps in March, when more than half a million users reported widespread problems such as being booted from the social media platforms and no longer able to log in. In this case, Meta blamed an unspecified “technical issue” that was causing problems for users.
