A crippling service outage has hit several of Meta’s apps, with thousands of people across the United States reporting problems accessing their Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp accounts.

According to monitoring website DownDetector, the outage appears to have started around 12:36 p.m. EST, with Facebook first affected before spreading across the platforms. Facebook in particular appears to be the worst hit, with reports of service disruptions peaking at 107,005 around 1 p.m. EST.

Instagram peaked with 68,108 reports on DownDetector, while WhatsApp fared better with 9,301 reports. Threads was also affected, although the disruption was not as severe, only seeing 789 reports. Keep in mind that this is just one source. There may be many more people who were unable to log in.

Meta is aware of these issues and is working on a solution. The tech giant released a statement saying it was trying to “get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologized for any inconvenience.” If you visit Meta’s status website, you’ll see that at the time of writing, most of the company’s services were experiencing “significant disruptions.” It is currently unknown what is causing the disruption other than it is a technical issue.

It seems that services are slowly coming back. Instagram used to be inaccessible and nothing was refreshing. However, my personal account feed was able to refresh and I was able to save posts, although story posts are still not visible.

At first glance, the service could be available again soon, but the exact timing is not yet known. We will keep you updated with further information as it becomes available.
