The Red Sox and Yankees are reportedly fighting for another top free agent

The Red Sox and Yankees are destined to do this forever, right?

Boston and New York are reportedly among those in consideration for Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Houston and Detroit were also mentioned as possible applicants.

Bregman was closely linked to both the Red Sox and the Yankees, with the former reportedly divided over whether or not they actually wanted to acquire him. Boston isn’t exactly a fit, although the 30-year-old is reportedly open to playing second base – which has been a black hole at Fenway Park for nearly half a decade. New York, meanwhile, has a gaping hole at the top of its roster after Juan Soto traveled across town to cash checks worth $765 million over the next 15 seasons.

Bregman has three seasons in which he hit a combined .260/.349/.449 with 74 home runs, 96 doubles and 266 RBIs, all more than respectable numbers, while playing some of the best third base of any player in baseball.

The Red Sox need a right-handed bat to balance their lineup, although some other options may be more affordable. The Yankees need to move to the top of their rankings after losing their best player. Who will come out on top?
