Wolverhampton Wanderers: Gary O’Neil remains coach at Molineux

Under-pressure Wolves coach Gary O’Neil retains the club’s support and will continue to take charge despite the difficult situation he finds himself in.

There were suggestions the 41-year-old’s job was in jeopardy with the Molineux club second bottom in the Premier League.

Sources have told BBC Sport that the club hierarchy does not see the head coach as a problem and has committed to supporting him.

This also includes next month’s transfer window, in which Wolves will look to sign a centre-back.

Despite just two wins from 15 games this season, Molineux believe the team has the quality to get out of harm’s way and survive, and the club remains calm after struggling with relegation battles in the past had.

Wolves lost 2-1 at West Ham on Monday, their third defeat in a row, and host 18th-placed Ipswich on Saturday.

After the defeat at the London Stadium, O’Neil said he was not worried about his future, citing how the club had sold £200 million worth of talent in the last 18 months.

Wolves sold Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes in 2023 before making almost £100m from the sales of Max Kilman to West Ham and Pedro Neto to Chelsea in the summer.

“I’m not worried,” O’Neil told BBC Sport when asked about his position.

“The club has gone through an incredible change since I’ve been here.

“We have signed some players who will be really good for this club in the future, but we have lost a lot. That makes it more difficult.”

“(Since I’ve been here) we’ve lost £200 million worth of talent. We understand that it will be hard. We will make an effort and get going again.”

“Whenever this journey with Wolves ends, I will be proud.”

O’Neil has earned the loyalty of the players and enjoys support in the dressing room despite their difficulties, sources told BBC Sport.

Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs and chairman Jeff Shi are also keeping an eye on their start, as O’Neil’s side have faced every team in the current top six in their first eight games.

After hosting Ipswich, Wolves travel to Leicester on December 22nd before facing Manchester United at the Molineux on Boxing Day and Tottenham in north London on December 29th.
