Could the Red Sox pursue top free agent after reporting Garrett Crochet?

The Red Sox needed a left-handed starter this offseason.

But maybe they won’t stick with one?

Just hours after the Red Sox reportedly acquired Garrett Crochet in a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox, Boston was included in speculation about free agent pitcher Corbin Burnes.

“(Scott) Boras has had serious discussions with the San Francisco Giants for Burnes and has spoken with the Boston Red Sox and others,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote in a story published Wednesday evening.

Nightengale’s views contrasted with those of Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

“I would say the Red Sox would be less likely to gamble on Corbin Burnes at this point,” Heyman said on MLB Network a few hours after trading Boson for Crochet. “Because they had several good starters, they wanted a left-handed hitter. They’ve now added a starter, not just a starter, but a standout. So I would say they would be less likely. But Burnes still has a market and several interested teams.”

Heyman reported that the Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants are two teams vying for Burnes.

The Red Sox remain connected to free agent sluggers Teoscar Hernandez and Alex Bregman.

The Red Sox acquired Crochet in a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox, as first reported by Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe. Boston sent four prospects to Chicago as part of the deal, according to multiple reports.

It’s easy to understand the expected change in Boston. The Red Sox responded to their biggest need by adding left-hander Crochet, and while no team can ever have enough front-line starters, Boston might prefer to add pieces at other positions.
