Bill Belichick closes deal to become UNC’s next football head coach: reports

Watch out Chapel Hill, Bill Belichick is coming.

Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels have reportedly reached a deal for the 72-year-old to become their next football head coach, according to ESPN.

The Athletic reports that UNC will give Belichick a three-year contract worth $30 million.

The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach remained interested in returning to the sidelines at some point in the future, but it was always expected that he would return to the NFL after finding a new gig following his departure from the NFL had missed New England Patriots before this season. After all, before this season, Belichick had already been in the league in some capacity since 1975.

But earlier this week, The Guardian US reported that Belichick had agreed to become the new head coach at Chapel Hill, adding that Belichick had handed the school a 400-page “organizational bible” with structure, payment plans, personnel decisions, etc.

Then on Wednesday, ESPN reported that both sides were close to reaching an agreement, with some issues still needing to be worked out.

OutKick’s Trey Wallace reported that the final hurdle is negotiating zero money, and if that is resolved, an emergency trustee meeting would be called to finalize the deal. It’s ready now and the final step is to wait for the news that it’s official.

Among the boxes that needed to be checked was reportedly an unusual request from Belichick, who wants his son Stephen Belichick, who serves as Washington’s defensive coordinator, to be his future coach and step in if his father decides to leave the program.

This will be Belichick’s first stop as a college football coach. His father, Steve Belichick, was a longtime assistant coach at Navy. But he had a stint with the Tar Heels in the 1950s.

Belichick has been in the media spotlight for much of the current NFL season after his interviews for NFL jobs did not result in a job offer.

While he was interviewing with the Atlanta Falcons in January, the franchise decided against extending an offer. Belichick didn’t seem to attract much interest from any other NFL team, but his regular appearances on ESPN’s “ManningCast” and the CW’s “Inside the NFL” have introduced him to football.

During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, Belichick confirmed that he has had discussions with UNC about the head coaching job, adding that he has spent the 11 months since his departure from the Patriots pursuing a ” “To take a longer look” at college football during the season and not in the spring before the draft as a professional coach.

“So it was a good year for me. I learned a lot,” Belichick said. “So I had the opportunity to speak with Chancellor (Lee) Roberts and we had some good conversations. So we’ll see how it goes.”

When asked by McAfee, Belichick declined to elaborate. Instead, Belichick made a joke about his reputation for giving curt answers during press conferences with the Patriots.

“Yeah, let’s just leave it at that, Pat,” Belichick said, grinning. “I mean, I don’t want to give away too much information. I want to get my press conference aura back.”

Belichick shared some details about the makeup of a college program if he were a head coach.

“If I were to go to a college program, the college program would be a connection to the NFL for the players that would have the opportunity to play in the NFL,” he said. “It would be a professional program – training, nutrition, programming, coaching and techniques that would translate to the NFL.”

Belichick is one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. He finished the 2023 season with 333 career wins – placing him second on the all-time coaching wins list. Don Shula still leads all coaches with 347 wins.
