USMNT’s McKennie and Weah combine for historic Champions League goal

USA internationals Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah were instrumental in helping Juventus beat Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The two of them also made history.

Weah delivered a perfect cross to his USMNT teammate in the second half of Juve’s 2-0 win over City, and when McKennie drilled a gorgeous sideways volley past Éderson, the two became the first Americans in Champions League history to share one Scored a goal and provided an assist.

“Given the situation we’re in, it was a big moment for the team,” McKennie said after the game. “We wanted to come out and do our best. We knew Man City could punish us with an action and we knew what kind of game it was going to be and we wanted to win this game to boost our confidence.”

The result snapped a run of four straight draws for Juventus, who are sixth in Serie A, and kept them on course to reach the knockout stages of the Serie A with 11 points and a spot in 14th place this year’s redesigned Champions League.

Weah and McKennie have both been part of the US senior national team since 2018 and have played a combined 73 games for club and country. After the game, the elder McKennie spoke about the challenges of being an American and playing for a top team in Europe.

“As an American, this is something you have to deal with, but I like it,” McKennie said. “I like it when people doubt me and sometimes I play my best football when people doubt me.”

Thiago Motta was full of praise for McKennie after the game, saying he brings numerous qualities to his team every time he takes the field.

“Weston can do everything,” said the Juventus coach after the game. “He has unusual physicality but also great technique, knows when to time his runs and can be even more dangerous when coming from the back, as we saw today and against PSV Eindhoven.”

“We are lucky to have players with these qualities because he can offer us different alternatives during a game. I’m happy for him and all the players tonight.”

Juventus have now beaten Man City in each of the two teams’ last three meetings and set the Premier League championship record of six consecutive games unbeaten against Italian sides.
