Sheryl Swoopes wants to know the criteria for Caitlin Clark TIME Female Athlete of the Year

Caitlin Clark was named TIME’s 2024 Female Athlete of the Year. And it’s no surprise that Sheryl Swoopes has questions.

For whatever reason, Swoopes has made it his goal to become Clark’s biggest critic. Sure, she recognizes that Clark is good at basketball. But every time the WNBA legend says something positive about the Indiana Fever star, she feels the need to immediately back it up with some sort of criticism. And this time it’s no different.

At an appearance this week at the Gil’s Arena On the podcast, Swoopes discussed Clark’s latest honor.

“I don’t think I’m surprised,” Swoopes said after looking at the ceiling and taking a long pause. “I’m excited to see who the other candidates were, but the fact that this is the first WNBA player to ever win TIME “Sportsman of the Year” from the magazine is something very special.”

But there is always a limitation. And that part came next.

“My question is, like the criteria: Is it based on their performance on the field?” Swoopes asked. “Yeah, she had a great year, or is it more about the impact she had on the game this season?”

To clarify, TIME made it clear in the article why Clark won the award — noting not only her record-breaking first-year stats, but also the fact that she set attendance and attendance records with both the WNBA and the Indiana Fever have set up.

Despite all of this, Clark endured constant pressure (and cheap fouls) throughout the 2024 season, and her fans were often called racists for supporting a white player in a league with predominantly Black athletes. Many athletes and media personalities (such as Sheryl Swoopes) argued that much of Clark’s popularity was due to her skin color and not her skills on the basketball court.

In the interview for TIME, Clark acknowledged this so-called white “privilege” and added that it was important to promote “black women” in the league.

However, that’s obviously not good enough for Swoopes.
