Red Sox make trade with Yankees to fill emergency situation

Wednesday was, at least for now, a two-trade day for Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.

The Red Sox made headlines when they signed Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet to a four-round deal for the first time. Breslow’s second deal later in the day wasn’t as notable, but still filled a position Boston needed.

The Red Sox announced that they have acquired catcher Carlos Narváez from arch-rival New York Yankees in exchange for a minor league pitcher Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international bonus pool court. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox also designated Enmanuel Valdez for assignment.

The 26-year-old Narváez could compete to become Boston’s backup catcher next season after Danny Jansen signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in free agency and the Red Sox acquired top catching prospect Kyle Teel as part of the deal Exchanged Crochet.

Narváez has just six big league games under his belt, all last season with the Yankees. He hit .231 with no home runs and no RBIs while also walking twice. He threw out a base runner and allowed a base runner.

The Venezuelan native, who signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2015, posted some solid results at the plate with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2024, batting .254 with 20 doubles, 11 home runs and 58 RBIs. He also showed defensive versatility, making 58 starts as a catcher, 23 as a designated hitter and 12 at first base. Narváez also has limited experience playing third base.

The Red Sox selected Rodriguez-Cruz in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, but in three minor league seasons, the right-hander never made it past High-A Greenville.

This is the second trade the Red Sox and Yankees have made in consecutive offseasons. One of Breslow’s first moves with the Red Sox last year was trading Alex Verdugo for three pitchers.
