Red Sox and Yankees complete a rare trade that lands a new catcher in Boston

After the Boston Red Sox sent a package containing four of their top 20 prospects to the Chicago White Sox for left-handed starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, it wasn’t the last trade Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow wanted to make on Wednesday.

According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox have acquired catcher Carlos Narvaez from the New York Yankees in exchange for minor league pitcher Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and an international bonus pool spot.

To make room for the catcher on the 40-man roster, Boston designated Enmanuel Valdez for assignment.

Narvaez, 26, signed with the Venezuelan Yankees as an international free agent in 2015. He played six games for New York last year, recording three hits and two walks in 15 plate appearances. At Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, he hit .54 with a .782 hit, 11 home runs, 58 RBIs and nine stolen bases.

Rodriguez-Cruz, 21, was a fourth-round draft pick by Boston in 2021 by Leadership Christian (Puerto Rico). With Low-A Salem and High-A Greenville in 2024, he posted a 2.91 ERA, 1.204 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 in 89 2/3 innings over 21 games (20 starts).

Boston traded top catcher Kyle Teel in this Crochet package, so they need someone to back up Connor Wong. Narvaez is currently the best option for this.
