LOS ANGELES, Calif. (WKRC) – A Mega Millions jackpot winner filed a lawsuit after he said he bought two jackpot winning tickets but lost the second one.

Accordingly The New York PostMega Millions jackpot winner Faramarz Lahijani claims he bought two jackpot winning tickets sold at the same gas station in California last year, but lost the second ticket when the time to claim the reward ran out.

Lahijani came forward publicly and claimed half of the $394 million prize in a drawing held on December 8, 2023.

The tickets were reportedly sold at a Chevron gas station on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, California The postwhich noted that each ticket was worth $197.5 million.

In California, the holder of a winning ticket has one year to win the jackpot. In a lawsuit against the California Lottery filed on December 6, just hours before the December 7 expiration date, Lahijani claimed he purchased the second ticket but misplaced it and was therefore the winner of the remaining jackpot $197.5 million.

“Because plaintiff submitted the first matching ticket in a timely manner, he is entitled to the entire jackpot,” the lawsuit states, according to Patch.

Accordingly The post, Lahijani claimed that the winning numbers 21, 26, 53, 66, 70 and Mega Ball 13 were chosen by his children, adding that he has been using these numbers for decades.

According to the publication, lottery officials made several statements about how the same numbers could be played in the same location.

“While this is incredibly unusual and interesting, it is not unheard of,” a California Lottery spokesperson said back in 2023 The post. “There are lots of explanations; Maybe someone wanted to try their luck on two different lines for some reason, or maybe a few friends wanted to try their luck on exactly the same numbers. We won’t know exactly how this happened until the prize is claimed.”

The Chevron location in Encino made history when it was awarded a record bonus of more than $1.9 million, which was the largest amount ever paid out to a single retailer in California Lottery history, the publication reported .

Retailers who sell a jackpot winning ticket valued at over $1 million will receive a bonus of half a percent of the winnings up to $1 million, with the Chevron location earning $987,500 on each winning ticket.
