Facebook, Instagram and Threads have recovered after a massive outage

A number of meta apps experienced major problems on Wednesday. When the outage first occurred around 1 p.m. ET, many employees were out of business The edgeApps like Facebook and Instagram weren’t loading or showing older posts. However, Meta now says things have recovered (or are basically all the way there).

During the worst of the outages, Downdetector experienced large and sudden spikes on Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, indicating this a lot of people were affected by outages. The Instagram Downdetector page, for example, saw a peak of more than 66,000 reports of problems with the platform. The Facebook peak exceeded 83,000.

Meta confirmed issues on (ironically) X just before 2:00 p.m. ET. But a few hours later, the company said things were mostly resolved.

“Thank you for your understanding!” Meta wrote at 5:26 p.m. ET. “We are 99% there – just doing a few final checks. We apologize to those affected by the outage.”

“Andddd, we’re back – sorry for the wait and thanks for joining us,” Instagram said at 6:02 p.m. ET.

This major outage follows another major meta outage in March that brought down Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Meta also experienced a major outage on Instagram and Facebook in October 2022.
